Our Mascot

Geese in Beaver Creek State Park

Geese in Beaver Creek State Park, Ohio

As I was designing the header for this site, it was important to me to find an image that would represent the idea of writers unleashing themselves.

At first I visualized horses galloping across a prairie. Although I found several stirring photos of horses galloping, they did not fit the dimensions I needed (960×250 pixels, for any WordPress nerds reading).

Next I googled ‘birds soaring’ and was moved by many colorful and tender sky scenes, as well as the beauty of various birds in flight. But nothing I could really use. Seagull. Hawk. Eagle. Hummingbird. There was something missing each time, despite the mind-blowing photography.

I made more coffee and kept clicking and scrolling through pages of search results. Suddenly I was electrified by the sight of a glider being followed by a formation of geese. This was it! No question. The perfect image to go with the theme of this site: unleash your writing and then follow where it leads you.

I grabbed my copy of Animal Spirit Guides and turned to Goose. There were several messages relevant to my own life at that point, but as far as the purpose for this website goes, here’s what jumped out:

Write creative and imaginative stories, either about actual
experiences you’ve had or those that are made up

I loved the way that all came together and felt so right—even though I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for until I found it.

Incidentally, if you’re wondering about the glider: the photographer identifies it as a Delta wing.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about our mascot. I’ve dubbed her WriteGoose.
